Zoning Board

The Zoning Board consists of five regular members and two alternates appointed by the Town Council for terms of five years. The powers and duties of the board include authorizing variances and special use permits according to the Town of Hopkinton ordinances. They are also responsible to hear and decide appeals where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by the zoning enforcement officer.

The Zoning Board of Review typically meets on the third Thursday of every month at 7:00 pm in the Town Council chambers.

An application must be submitted to the Zoning Board no later than the Tuesday of the week prior to the meeting in order to be placed on the agenda for that month.

Usually, the process lasts two meetings. The first meeting is used to determine the completeness of the application. The second meeting is the hearing stage. This meeting is more detailed, where members of the board will ask questions and clarify any uncertainties. This is also where members of the public are invited to speak. After the hearing is closed, the Zoning Board will determine findings of fact and make a decision based on the evidence presented.

Abutter notices are required to be mailed, via certified mail, at least 14 days before your hearing date. Examples of an abutter notice can be obtained from the Building & Zoning Department.
