Appeal of Assessment

After tax bills are mailed in July of any given year, if a property owner would like to dispute the assessment amount, a formal application for Appeal of Property Tax must be submitted to the Tax Assessor’s office. The form may be found here from the link above, picked up at the Assessor’s office at Town Hall, or you can request a form be mailed to you. This form must be submitted to the Assessor’s office within 90 days of when the first quarterly payment is due. This payment is due on September 8th of any given year, making the deadline to file an appeal December 8th.

The Assessor has 45 days to review the appeal, render a decision, and notify you of the decision. If you are still aggrieved, you may appeal the decision to the Tax Board of Review, or in the event that the assessor does not render a decision, you may appeal to the Tax Board of Review at the expiration of the 45 day period. Appeals to the Tax Board of Review shall be filed not more than 30 days after the assessor renders a decision, or, if the assessor does not render a decision, not more than 90 days after the expiration of the 45 day period.

When submitting an appeal, ensure to attach any and all back-up documentation to support your appeal.
